John Galm from Snowing wrote this...

"I honestly know what he's talking about because it makes me feel TERRIBLE when I hear bands that people will potentially categorize with/compare to snowing and they have fucking lame lyrics/call people fags, etc. it's not right or cool and should not be taken lightly, because, fuck, why would it be? believe it or not, what we engage in is a form of punk, and punk is all about being part of a radical community. unfortunately, radical ideas in the world right now aren't really radical at all. it's more, "I'm a person that knows right from wrong." calling someone a faggot is wrong. writing songs that are derogatory towards women is wrong. thinking it's okay and fun and, "man, you're too serious", is fucking wrong.

the guys in chalk talk are super nice dudes. the few times we've met, I've been really impressed by them as people, but the song "misquamicut has bigger waves though" really puts a bad taste in my mouth. I mean, you can tell me I'm taking lines like, "statutory rape you'll never forget" out of context, but when I hear a song by a band, I shouldn't have to think about that. when I listen to that song, I think "chalk talk are fucking degrading assholes and I don't understand how anyone can support them." now, I don't think that, but having met them, I know why not to. for people like me who have heard that song but will never meet chalk talk, they instantly lost a listener.

now, I'm not trying to blacklist chalk talk, but it's the illegitimate treatment of such issues that allow bands like daijel white to write songs called, "hot chicks; fat tits". listen to it on their myspace.

if you don't see an issue there, you're either choosing not to see it or you're an idiot and I hope you don't like my band. honestly, we're playing with them in two weeks, and that just makes me uncomfortable. I'd drop the show if I knew people weren't going to see snowing.

welp, this is long winded. I got into punk because I didn't fit in with bro assholes and found a community where I felt safe to be myself. being a sexist dick excludes women. calling people homophobic names excludes gays/lesbians. we all apparently care about this whole "scene" we've all helped create, so we need to do our best to teach those who don't understand these problems why they are issues and how it's hurting the cause. I hope that we can eradicate these hateful ideas and create a stronger community because of it. "

Summer

I just finished watching this film and it made me feel a million different feelings that i didn't feel 10 minutes ago. About how amazing this summer was and how much i'm going to miss it. So many things, so many awesome things and people surrounded me this whole summer. I traveled half the country with my best friends and played music. I met so many people, saw so many things, and had expercienes i'll never be able to explain. There is nothing i love more than being with my friends, traveling, sleeping on dirty floors, being tired and hot and hungry. I would give any amount of money in the world to live this life forever. Over the summer i got close to the kids from a band ( a fucking amazing band) called the guru. I spent time hanging out in there town and met more awesome kids. I can't describe with words or pictures or music the love i have for these people. At the end of the summer my two piece project, zephyr deathstare, went on a three day tour ( that ended up only being two days for the guru) with them and it was some of the most refreshing, best times i had all summer. Watching this film brought all those memories back fresh in my mind and i feel like there is a hole inside me that is missing those times. There is a venue in watertown Connecticut called Caffe Napoli. I have been to it twice but both times it was insane. So many kids who are all friends filled the tiny room from wall to wall just to have fun and listen to music. Today i was informed that this cafe went bankrupt. And i know it hurts alot more people than it does me but my emptyness was furthered when i learned this. Fall weather makes it one of my favorite seasons but today i realized how much fall fucking sucks. Fall is the time all of your friends go to different schools, fall is the time summer ends, fall is the time that comes before winter. Fuck the fall give me spring becuase every spring i know is leading up to a summer. Change is unavoidable and sucks but you have to realize things have changed before all the awesome times you've had and things will keep on changing. things will always work out if you make them. fuckit. aff.

middle ground

I was at work today thinking about the cycle of things that happen in my life. My focus has never revolved around my job even though i work 5 or 6 days a week. I realized that being at the place i work means nothing and has no significance other than being middle ground. Being in this area and going through the grind of work, bills, friends, chores is just the down time from one important experience to another. This is a place i need to be to plan and save for something that will be coming. It's like i'm just recharging my battery getting ready for the next adventure and it never ends because there is something inside of me that won't let my mind rest for more than a couple hours. I always need to be looking forward to something and when i'm not i scramble to find something to be able to look forward too. And if that ever stops then i don't know what i'll have.

The Food Chain

I started listening to Chalk Talk by default because the drummer of the band was a friend i had grown up with. Our first tour together in June of 2009 opened my eyes to what they were really about. Since then we have played countless shows, met tons of people, and seen amazing new places. Their first major release is called " the food chain" and i know all the songs inside and out after hearing them played a couple hundred times and spending time in the studio with them. At first the songs to me were like a joke. Simple and about "stupid" things. But the more i listen the more i realize how good this record is. I know the band likes to categorize themselves as "surf" but i think they are wrong to do so. The songs aren't about the shore or any of that surf trend bullshit but instead they are songs that everyone can relate to in a lighthearted way. Everyday moments that most people experience but never notice are captured in these songs. Sexual frustrations that everyone has and laughs about are layed out on the table and openly talked about. Small decisions and little things you notice every single day are all talked about in this album. There has never been a Chalk Talk set that i haven't wanted to sing along to at least one song, which is saying alot because i have played with those motherfuckers more times than i care to count. I decided to write this first album review as a way to clear my head. I think this band has something great that is their own creation and i don't want to see them fall into the reverb drentched pits of the pompus beachy surf bands that sadly rule most of the music scene. I don't like happy music, it usually makes me sick but this band i have grown to love.

kids

I think the biggest mistake kids make is forcing themselves to go to a college right after highschool. There is no rule that says you have to, so if there is anything you want to do, then do it instead. And if you need to be kept busy then take classes at community college. And if you want to go to a university then the smartest thing you can do is clear some credits easily and cheaply at a community college. There is no rush enjoy your fucking life first.
